Thoughts on Battles

Yesterday we fought some battles and I want to have an ongoing discussion about how the battle-system works. Or rather how you think it works. Flaws will be worked out eventually and both improvements and changes will be made over time. But for these improvements, changes and flaws to be attended to, I first must know where they are. So I begin with your subjective opinions.

My overall observation and feel of the battles yesterday is; good. Not great. But overall good. When it comes to the rules, I still have to work on some of the definitions and workings. But overall, good. Too bad though that too many an good creative attacks went bad. Both for you and the NPCs.

Just as a side note. I’m not interested in complains of BEP, STG or AP. The BEP is a relative system which is meant to be mostly a reference of how fast you develop and get used to battles. So it’s mostly up to the game master to decide how much experience can be assimilated by the participants. The only rules are when you get to the next level. As for AP, it’s almost the same. Since I sometimes gives you double perfect (5 or 7 on both skill and property) and sometimes gives you small AP for trying or just doing the right thing I think it’s well enough.

Well, well, so opinions on battle?

PS. I have a post I’ll soon post about the different Weapon Categories. Be on the lookout. .DS

Well other than the stuff you already declared irrelevant I don’t have too much to say off the top of my head really. It works pretty well I think.

One thing I thought of while we were playing is that SC recovers really fast without any action from the player. You get like 4 SC back each time it is your turn to act. In comparison you get 6 SC (?) back while actively resting, which Aedys did once during the fight. This feels like a very small difference. Though I guess there still are more effective ways of recovering, like sitting down, as it was before. I don’t know what you have done with the system since then.

I’m not convinced that the balance here makes people want to redraw temporarily from combat to catch ones breath. Which I think was one of the design goals?

Right now it feels like only fatigue and exertion matters.

Yes, the thought crossed my mind now when you mentioned it. I think I will reduce the passive recovery in upcoming battles and force you to have liquid available to do the active recovery.

But you are right, one should take temporarily redraws in battle to gain recovery. Well, well, I will experiment further.

Well, it felt decent, I havent really had the chance to try something out yet, except jumping around. and I think sometimes you forgot to give recoveries because I just have the opposite feeling, I was always spending like 10-12 SC before I got one recovery and that was always over a period of time.

And since you have started to give fatigue out of combat as well when you have used SC I dont think a “nerf” in the SC recovery is really needed.

I agree with PB, the efficiency of “regular” sc to fatigue ratios are what you should work with in my opinion. I.e. for prolonged fighting you need active resting to be able to keep it up, this is good in my opinion.
