Potency’s Removed

Not that any of you really care about this, but I’ve kind of removed this concept from the game. I will probably add it later to Legends since the base template for this isn’t gone.

To describe how I’ve made the potency system it’s kind of a shuffle-order of quantity behind the properties. The use for this is actually to make lesser values become stronger or weaker depending on how you prioritize your character and how you want your character to be. For instance to have more strength in your force than a normal person of your race.

At first this was just a concept to take some importance from the numbers in the game since a lot of my players are too focused around them. Then when I created it as a system, it became so much more. It’s a conceptual idea as well as a baseline to see the differences between the races.

The potency system is/was built in three parts; Maximum Value, Potency and PRO and CON properties. Of these three what’s actually potency is Potency, loud and clear, Maximum Value is the upper limit for a normal person of that race. Kind of like the reality of human limits. There’s a limit to how strong a human can be, due to mass and everything and this is that value. Potency is a relative skill to translate how “pure” your value is. I’ll get back to this. PRO and CON is the order of Properties which decides how potency’s and maximum values are shuffled when you raise something above your limits. In essence, when you raise something, something else drops.

The first of these three will still apply. This will be when spontaneous training will become impossible. Thus meaning when your character reaches your races maximum value in something he needs special training to raise each property. I’ve decided that from now on, you put a star next to the name of the property when you reach your maximum BUT you still get AP on that property. You can, when you reach your maximum get PM or you can break your maximum or use it on skills tied to that particular property. If you start above your maximum value or is raised above this value in some way you will automatically push down the CON property tied to that property. Also when you are forcibly reduce your property you will raise the PRO property tied to the property. This will still be left and I will keep the notes of that in my group file where I track your values.

Potency is the complicated and unnecessary bit of it all. It’s a little bit complicated to say how it works since sometimes it’s ignored. Sometimes a possession of a skill or a lore will bypass the potency. But in essence all potencies has a value from 1-10, which you almost could say is x1, x2 etc of your value in some situations. It’s like levels but for properties. It depends if one level is worth 1 or 10. Anyhow it’s mostly tied to the “raw” property behind it. Say like force is tied to strength and Force is a property which describes how much of your Strength you can apply. Strength could then be described as how strong you are or can be, while Force says how much of your strength you can effectively use. So a value of 15 would suggest that you only use 75% of your actual strength. In this system there are some values which are ignored since they are the same for all living beings. These are MCH, SPI and APT. The rest often varies. This is what I’ll remove and stop even thinking of in regular gaming, if ever again. Depends on how long Nianze survives.

PRO and CON is a table which I have next to your values which gives all properties two other properties tied to it. It’s made as a loop so a domino effect will take place until the value has been levelled. This system though is actually built up by three loops. Since some properties does not tie back to others. One of these three loops though pushes the value out of that loop into another loop. But there is no return path. I’m quite satisfied with this system since I’ve tried it a lot and it seems like I can do this until everything is 20 or 10 depending on if it’s used for MAX or POT. Though with this system, it’s impossible to get 20 or 10 in everything. The most I’ve been able to get is 9 20s, and then I’m counting MCH, SPI and APT. This is more a tool to see what happens when you rise something and it will still be used for your maximum values. Humans mostly have 14 and 15 as maximums while the other races have a more varied setup.

Well, at least that was some insight into my system…

One less complexity to think about.

I think potency is an interesting concept and so, but I feel like its more of a tool for the gamemaster and it felt weird assigning your own potency as you could awhile back.

I just hope we dont go back to the dark ages and just say that all properties are just equal no matter what kind of character. like for instance an orc that has force 12 and looks like ryt is just as strong as a panling with 12 force.

    Thanks for the insight though.
