The Eye – Big Jump?

Well, I’ve been thinking a little lately about your request to do a big mission after the Platoon Exercise. I’ve also thought and reviewed your opinions, thoughts, reasons and goals behind your character and where you want to get with your characters and a few thoughts have come to mind but I want a light discussion and thoughts about this from you here on the blog before anything is decided.

Just to review the group’s main purpose right now;

We play in the Eye mainly because I want to develop this great military organization who tries to control and help the world. I want to make it more concrete and to fit with the new revisions of the world. I want also a deeper system for this organization thus you play from the beginning.

You play different characters with a different skillset and techniques and areas of expertise. You are trying out Skilled and Mantra plus Rasmus is trying to find a way to develop his character into something more special in the Tyniker area. I myself have created a few character for dynamical purposes as well as to have an opportunity to develop and try some things in my game. The latest addition a Littlemen Hannje. Her focus though is mostly her abilities with skills, her racial Wane and also some battle oriented stuff as well as poisons.

You all seem to want to advance. Or maybe not Rasmus, but I’m not really sure in that area since he’s expressing contradictory things all the time. Trying to be unpredictable or rather just be mostly confused as usual.

I highly doubt any of you will reach Solider in the exercise thus I’m thinking of giving you the opportunity to jump to when one or all of you have reached solider. Either we do this in a massive training and jumping in time session and finish with a massive quest which is the drop which makes the cup overflow. In other words, which will be the last thing needed to get a promotion or something.

Or we can just speed things up a bit. But mostly focusing on the quests of importance. And even so hasten up quests to a higher pace like when Owenalh and Tatsuo were on mission or rather when Tatsuo and Katherine were on the hunt for that criminal scum. We do it like this until you reach your promotion, and when one of you finally become solider we return to a more normal speed.

Or we could just simply jump to Solider. Upgrade everyone to solider and decide a little how things have developed socially as I give you some free bonuses to put out a little as you wish and maybe a few rolls to see how things have turned out. This being the easiest and fastest alternative of them all.

I myself prefer the first alternative with the massive training part where I add key-events that I’ve wished to express and explain in a in-game perspective. Things like the Skilled-training with Katherine. And stuff with Alchemy and the Tynical Arts with Jens, Magical Training and magical workings with Owen and others. The Teachings of Tünge – the mantra Tatsuo have, and also some other stuff. This though will take a lot of time doing mostly boring stuff but with some parts where I include scenes like the above mentioned.

I estimate than in-game this might take one to two years of time too so you’ll get a general summary about what happens in The Eye as well as what The Eye knows about the outside world. I’ve also recently adapted a working-system from a book I’ve newly read and this will be implemented soon to to gain CD other ways than just doing missions and licking ass.

Well, then we could end everything when someone or several of you are close to becoming Soliders with this Great Squad Mission you wanted.

A forth, more dangerous way to get this promotion is possible to though. Exactly what this is though will be a mystery but what I can tell you is that it will be a high risk of dying and most likely a series of  events like a mini-campaign for your Squad. It might provide a good chaince of dying but the main purpose of this is also to give most in the squad the promotion they want. Including Robin.

Well, well…

Let the discussion commence! And Rasmus… do participate in this. You can’t simply disclose your opinions and views to me. You need to be a part of the group and not just a distant semi-present youngster =P

Well, ive felt that this group from a character viewpoint been quite unpurposeful so far and that the progress has been so-so.

I think that I prefer alternative one -or- two, since these cadet stuff in the compound mostly drags stuff out and it feels like alot of things are available for soldiers but not cadets.

Although I would like to see that our characters actually get somewhere with the code of conduct and stuff like that so we actually can use it and get a better feel of the difference between being a adventurer and a eye soldier.

However you say jumping one-two years? you said that “usually” people attain soldier rank within a year or so, would feel kind of lousy if we didnt made soldier soon. Oh well, thats not a big problem for me aslong as it has some reasoning as to why its going so slow.

Another thing I was thinking for my character alone is that I bought a horse = alot of CD cost per week so, I kind of need to be able to pay that one and give it some better fodder since I was aiming to train the horse as a warhorse.

I still dont really think my character will even reach captain before this group ends one way or another, but I do have other minor goals, but yeah I guess we will see how much time for training and stuff there will be.

one thing I would really want is the armor training, but you cant begin until soldier so.(would be fun seeing how this armor training is gonna work aswell, from a game testing perspective)

After some thought I’ve decided that I also prefer the first proposal (massive training), even though I don’t like the sound of “a lot of time doing mostly boring stuff”. This statement made me sigh a bit, but I still think it sounds like the best alternative.

I am interested in the campaign-like fourth alternative you mentioned though, as I have a feeling that it will give more opportunities to improve the mantra and I would very much like to do so.

Either of the two is fine by me anyway, vote of majority for the win?

The first alternative sounds more fun. Although the mystery alternative sounds somewhat awesome, but I think it’s to early for our characters to die…

Yes this is correct. Solider is the status of a “regular solider” in The Eye. It this rank you will no longer advance automatically. Thus most general stuff is available here.

Although I would like to see that our characters actually get somewhere with the code of conduct and stuff like that so we actually can use it and get a better feel of the difference between being a adventurer and a eye soldier.

As I see it, your code of conduct knowledge will be mostly how you yourself chose to play it. You will probably be able to study it to get a Knowledge slot for it too so you can roll for it. Otherwise I won’t note anything I don’t think should be obvious for your characters. You should be able to understand most of it from what you hear from others in-game and by observing stuff.

However you say jumping one-two years? you said that “usually” people attain soldier rank within a year or so, would feel kind of lousy if we didnt made soldier soon. Oh well, thats not a big problem for me aslong as it has some reasoning as to why its going so slow.

Well in general terms I would now say that it takes about a month for someone to go from recruit to Cadet. And about a year or so (or so meaning possibly more) to go from Cadet to Zero Solider (Solider of the 4th Rank – Rank 6). The advancement from Cadet to Solider depending on how many successful Quests one takes on and how many credentials one gets. One can take at most three (or actually six) quests/missions/assignments a month as a Cadet. All depending on your Squad and Squad Leader. So as I see it you will be within the normal time still with a semi-wide berth.

Another thing I was thinking for my character alone is that I bought a horse = alot of CD cost per week so, I kind of need to be able to pay that one and give it some better fodder since I was aiming to train the horse as a warhorse.

Yes, that will be accounted for. It’s not like you’ll lose your horse or anything this time. Even so, be sober and away when you play.

I still dont really think my character will even reach captain before this group ends one way or another, but I do have other minor goals, but yeah I guess we will see how much time for training and stuff there will be.

If I were you I would either try to find a solution to reach this faster (in-game and out of game). If you intend to go the long regular way to get this rank… yes then it will take more time than most groups have played so far. But say that we take 2-3 more big jumps or rise the tempo somewhat and more focus on quests in general it might be possible. Anyway, you need to push more to get something like that. Some thing simply isn’t possible just to get since it’s closely tied to age and experience in-game.

one thing I would really want is the armor training, but you cant begin until soldier so.(would be fun seeing how this armor training is gonna work aswell, from a game testing perspective)

Most likely this will be a benefit or something. I’m not sure where and how. But right now it seems like this will be trainable benefits depending on skill levels and properties.

  5. Patrik says:

Hmm well then, now that thats been answered I guess my preference would be on alternative one.

Yes, that will be accounted for. It’s not like you’ll lose your horse or anything this time. Even so, be sober and away when you play.

Hehe I guess I will be more awake, but I will be pouring alot of CDs I earn most likely on getting a good horse, and maybe after we have jumped(depending on how long the jump will end up being) I might even be able ride the horse now and then.

Yes, it made me sigh too, but I think that in total this would be the best. But it will give a possibility for Mantra and the mentioned stuff I said to be developed. Did you read the post?

The forth alternative won’t provide more opportunities to develop I than the first I think. But it’s hard to say. Most likely it will prove to have less opportunities but a more fun way to do stuff. It will be more eventful and exciting and also be a perfect chance to enhance a lot of stuff but it will at the same time be limited and dangerous. It will put everyone in the group, including Robin, to their limits.

The death risk is something you’ll always have in RPG unless you play dada-style. When you achieve Solider rank you’ll be faced with death a lot of times if you are to ever gain advancements. I don’t think it’s a matter of too early or too late in this case. It’s mostly an alternative which will prove to be more socially and funnier to do things. And if no pain, no gain.

Either of the two is fine by me anyway, vote of majority for the win?

No. I prefer that we agree on one thing. So an unanimous call.

After the Jump you’ll be fully capable to ride your horse more than now and then. I’ve also decided that Owenalh and most likely Mio will get a horse as well. Mio though will get a Pony while Owen will get a sturdy Travel Horse, Katian breed to have his stuff on.

  8. Daniel says:

It does sound like we’re all on the same page though, doesn’t it? Everyone seems to like “option 1”.

It is a matter of too much too soon.

It seems like option 1 is the one.

Indeed. Are everyone sure about this though? The fourth alternative will bring speed to the game and also give you your rank. A lot faster, in-game wise. And it will be a lot more exciting. Out of game it will take longer but it will be funnier.

As I said I’m willing to go either of the two, and the way you put it, it does sound good. But then if I know Patrik he won’t want that one, and Rasmus pretty much just said that he’d rather take the safer path.

    Heh, pussies.

  13. Mikael says:

Since I’m not in the group yet, would it be possible to choose another alternative than the rest?

Don’t know if I will be introduced before we start, but I think I’d rather join the group as a stranger than start training a few years just after I’ve made my character, seems kinda redundant. Anyway the mystery box sounds fun.

If the Mystery would have been chosen you could have entered there. But since that alternative seems to be out of the question you might be added to the group in the final quest which will grant them their promotion. In addition though you can get more points to create your character with if this choice is the final choice.

Even so the group still has one to three sessions left before the Platoon Exercise is finished. It was meant to be finished with one one-day session but that wasn’t the case and so far we’ve only been able to finish about one day of the seven-day exercise. One to maximum three sessions left before it’s even possible for new characters to join the group.
