The Eye
At first I thought to write this in “The Upcoming Group II” but since it took me so long time and due to the fact that you posted so many comments and questions (WHICH IS GOOD!) concerning your characters I thought it best to give all information and questions about The Eye itself its own post.
So this post is dedicated to The Eye, every question and wonders about The Eye as an organization or your characters future possibilities as well as your role in the Eye or whatever, take it here. So it’ll be easier to find the information later. Also know this is written as The Eye is at the year you’ll play , around 24-26.
The Eye
Introduction
The Eye, one of the biggest organizations on Yurin. A few years back they emerged from within the civil war of Katia. They were called “Hireswords”, Swords for Hire, that helped in everything they thought were just and correct. They cleaned up in almost all corners of the world, trying to fight for what’s good and right. They swept the lands in their uniform and astonished kings and queens with their deeds. They were impossible to bribe, they protected the weak and poor, and they punished the non-punishable. They were heroes of flesh and blood, they were mortal.
Background
In the third year of the Apocalyptic Age the young Warprince Olishid went on a journey to experience the world and to bring back a trophy like none other. During his travels he met people helped people and ended up saving Katia from a devious plot of Evil. To do that he gathered the most special, cunning, strong and powerful people he could find to do what only heroes could do. Save the ones to weak or to ignorant to defend themselves.
The army he built were truly an army of heroes and when they had saved Katia they couldn’t stop. They saw injustice, corruption and evil infect all lands and so the heroes split up over the world to set things right. They found corruption; they killed self proclaimed kings and rid the lands of many evil things. They quickly became famous for their ways and Olishid were awarded by the Gods with the first level of Immortality.
Then Olishid came upon the scrolls of the Apocalypse and when the Warprince studied them together with his heroes they decided to create an organization that were above every law, every land, and every gender or race to only fight for the survival of all. But they couldn’t win the apocalypse. Only a unified world could do that. So they decided to become the ones to watch over the world and make sure that Nianze was created. They became The Eye.
Directive
The directive of The Eye is built upon the requirements and conditions that has been given through the extensive prophecy of Apakros. Here follows some of the conditions as interpreted from the prohpecy;
- If the three forces don’t meet three times in a war, all things will end
- If the three forces meet three times and the victor unifies the land, a chance for a future will come
- If no victor has been declared when the day comes, everything will end
- If the victor hasn’t unified the land when the day comes, everything will end
- If the victor has been corrupt, everything will end
There are a lot of things told in the prophecy. The most important thing are;
There are three forces who will try to destroy everything, these are;
The Force of Will
The Force of Evil
The Force of Corruption
The Eye thus has a directive concerning this part which is one of the most important directives they have;
As a member of The Eye I will fight with all my might against;
The Forces of Will, and always try to be reasonable
The Forces of Evil, and always try to do good
The Forces of Corruption, and always try to correct myself
Initiaton
At the year 20, The Eye opened its gates when their city had been built with the help of all who believed in their cause. About two days northwest from Östersund, the Katian Residential City of Ostheim, they built the headquarters for The Eye. This fortress, surrounded by a city which is steadily growing was called Kesshin which means “To Watch from Above”.
When the city was finished they opened their gates for everyone who heard the “Call of the Hero” the call to save the world from this devastating tragedy that would take place. Everyone that felt like they were a Hero or wanted to become one is welcome in Kesshin. In Kesshin one could receive training and obtain knowledge and power to become powerful enough to change the world. Everyone has a chance to at least try to put their skills and ability to use in this Organization.
The initiation is simple. When you want to enlist you go to the office building outside the fortress in the city and write down your True Name or your Birth Name. Then you’ll get accommodation in one of the camp areas in the city and if you are lucky or have money you can even get room at one of the several inns and guesthouses and lodges in the city. Then you wait until you’re called by the Enlistment Office for review.
The review takes about one day where questions and various tests are performed to determine the skill and abilities of the applicant. If they want to have a higher post and skip some ranks they we’ll be forced to take some additional tests. When this is over there is some more waiting but before they day end a decision for the applicant’s initiation has been made. In most cases they are admitted and given their first order to appear at first light at the gates to the Kesshin Compound the next day.
The last part of the initiation is to destroy almost everything from your past life and to sign with blood in The Ledger of the Eye. One also swears an oath before the founder and leader Olishid where all bonds to your former Country and lords are officially broken and the applicants are now a part of the Brotherhood, and the Brotherhood is for life1.
The First Ranks
When the applicant has burned or destroyed most of their old personal belongings that aren’t of any value for his future in The Eye they will be assigned to a Unit that is suitable to the applicant depending on his results from the day before. From here on starts their carrier as well as their future.
Aspirant2
In some rare cases the applicants are not yet admitted to The Eye and not welcomed into the Compound but instead has gotten one or several tasks or requirements to work with outside the compound before they’ll officially become a part of the eye, an applicant in this position is called an Aspirant and he has technically no rank within The Eye itself, but The Eye provides a lodging and food for the Aspirant in the city outside the Compound for a limited amount of time while the Aspirant works to fulfil the requirements. An Aspirant often has three months to fulfil the requirements and will then be accepted in The Eye without much further inquires or troubles.
Recruit3
The first rank one often gets after the application is called Recruit. This rank is mostly a forgiving rank where the Recruit is mostly taught how things work in The Eye and also taught the Code of Conduct for The Eye. They are also put through a lot of exercises to learn different tactics, commands and methods within The Eye. The Recruit has no free time and aren’t free to decide anything for himself except one thing. When he’s ready to take his Initiate Quest, which is the first assignment or short quest one takes on. If the quest is successful the first time one will instantly be promoted to Initiate. If the quest however is a failure a penance will be set and needed to work off. There has been one case of a Recruit being a Recruit in one year before he finally managed to get his Initiate rank. But most people succeed at their first or second try.
Initiate4
The Initiate is the first rank in The Eye where one gets an allowance and can start earning Credentials. They will also have about 2 hours free time every day and also be able to leave the Compound if not the city for the first time without a quest. Depending on the age, gender, abilities and speciality of the Initiate they will have different restrictions. The Initiate also has the possibility to choose Minor Quests and Minor Assignments for Credentials and improvement. Initiates also have four internal Ranks which are determined by the number of Quests one have succeeded with and how many Credentials one has worked up. An initiate of Rank 2 is called; Initiate of the 4th Grade and an Initiate of rank 5 will be an Initiate of the 1st Grade. The initiate is also introduced to the Ways of Advancement within the ranks in The Eye and prepared for their first real advancement from Initiate to Solider through the Solider Exam. Initiates are also sometimes called Cadet.
Solider5
To become a Solider is a big step in The Eye. A step where the former Initiate for the first time is put through an Exam where he has not only the risk for failure to worry about but also the risk for death. The Exam is a Special Quest chosen by one of the Initiates Seniors or even the Initiate’s Captain. The Quest is often the hardest quest ever for the initiate so far and with a high risk of failure and with mortal consequences. The Initiate though has been warned and well prepared for this Exam and can choose to take it whenever he thinks he’s ready. This is also a quest where failure or abortion is not an option. An Initiate failing this Quest will be put through severe punishment and might in the worst cases be expelled or even executed.
When the Initiate becomes a Solider though, he will find himself in almost a different world from his or hers first five ranks within the Eye. He now got some control over his training and has an even higher salary and allowance than before. He can finally move out of the barracks if he has worked up enough Credentials and start to request special training. The Solider gets leave and can even get some extra benefits. He’s also finally able to obtain medals and other rank-enhancing and respectable decorations. Advancement though will start to become really hard to achieve. The Solider won’t advance just by doing missions but the Solider needs to both impress and accomplish a lot of things to gain respect and medals from the Officers. Soldiers also need to make themselves distinguish if they are to advance. Many though that comes to The Eye thinks that the Soldier’s 4th to 1st Grade is good enough for them6.
Vice Corporal7
To become a Vice Corporal or as they call them Eye Officer, one needs to during his Solider carrier distinguish oneself quite much and get medals of different kind and serve a specific number of hours or times in almost all the different and strenuous tasks there is in the Compound. If one gets The Hero’s Badge one can almost always assume they’ll be called before The Circle 8 to be tested to become a Vice Corporal. This is the first of the Officer-ranks in The Eye and it will come with many benefits but also many new obligations. There often isn’t a test to become a Corporal, the Soldiers are meant to strive for it if they want to advance, and thus one can never know when to be raised. There are possibilities to try to have other Officers to give one Special Assignments and Special Quests to get a better possibility to prove ones ability to be an Eye Officer. This though isn’t the only rank that is possible to strive for after Solider but the one with most future advancement.
An Eye Officer is actually not really an Officer per se but he gets the responsibility for units and to train and keep track on a specific group of Recruits, Initiates and Solider and make sure they get what they need and that they develop and has Senior members to turn to for help and development. The Eye Officer is also the one who is to choose their quests and tasks as well as decide what they’ll do for their Solider Exam. If the Eye Officer though wants to advance he has a hundred of different ways to do it through Exams, Quests, Assignments and whatever he can think of. He can use the men he is in charge of for this or he can try to go together with other Officers or even more high ranking officers to advance. The way of Advancement is to be of use for The Eye and to impress The Circle. But otherwise the Eye Officer is a quite free man with more possibilities than ever before.
That was the First Ranks in The Eye. Most members of The Eye goes as far as to Solider before they get their own Titles and Ranks. When one reaches the level where one can start to think of advancement to Eye Officer it’s also possible to pursue other advancement ranks such as Speciality Trainer, Agent, Assassin and Healer. There are a lot of different options and for some it’s not even possible to advance to Vice Corporal/Eye Officer because of the nature of their Abilities. Advancement though is always possible for everyone even though the chain of advancement will split up here so the last 10 ranks is highly different. It’s also harder to keep track who outranks who, which leads to a military political game with high cliffs and deep pits.
More will come. I’m currently writing on the following topics; Attire and Uniforms, Assignment, Missions and Quests, The Units and The High Command. If you have any request that you want to know about please post it here. All questions concerning The Eye will be taken here.

“True Name”, “Birth Name”? Care to clarify? The difference? Are they usually the same? Is this something new?
What is the difference between a quest and an assignment? A lot of emphasis seems to placed on that difference. Or maybe this is explained in the topic “Missions and Quests”?
Oh, one more question. Just got curious, could you give an example of an ability that makes you unable to advance to Eye Officer level?
They are usually the same yes. But in some countries and cultures you change name plus it’s possible to change your True Name with the help of a priest able to Baptise.
But sometimes you’ll be given a name when you are born but then you’ll get another name when you’re baptised. The Name you got when you are Baptised is your True Name and the name which could be used against you in various forms of Dark Arts or with the Divine Powers and Abilities.
It’s not really a new thing, it’s more an elaboration of something old to clarify how things work.
Yes in the part Assignment, Missons and Quests I will clarify the difference. But in general an Assignment is over a long period and not that “active” like Guard Duty in a Guard House for a month. A missions is things like; Find that person and kill him. And so on…
Dark Arts is one of these Abilities. It’s an evil ability derived from evil and with a big weakness that you are more susceptible to evil influences. You also can turn evil and corrupt if you get too much power and responsibilities. Thus Kremises are never Officers in the general sense.
Very interesting reading, I am particularly interested in advancement in The Eye. I even got some ideas for my character background and developement relating to admittance and the directives. Might turn into something good.
Good for you. I’m glad you liked it and that it helps with your character. Do not forget the part III. I want to finish the characters soon!
I had some questions on the code of conduct earlier that didn’t get answered, I’ll repost them here:
“When not on a mission are we expected to protect the weak just because they can’t protect themselves?
What about on a mission? Can we ignore ‘a situation’ as long as it doesn’t interfer with the mission itself?”
That depends on the orders for the mission. Plus your own aspiration and true intentions.
You can ignore it, but you are in The Eye to help the world become good, just and fair. Thus you shall do everything in your power that helps that cause according to you. So if its possible you could do it even though your missionstatement says that you are to focus on the mission.
Well, by “can” I meant “are we allowed to?”.
A face to face discussion would be nice right about now, I hate typing like this 😛
Anyway I was wondering about wheter the satanistic point of view is that it is a ‘good’ thing to help those who can’t help themselves? Seems like it wouldn’t be to me, with all the ‘rule of the strong’ theme.
Concerning the satanic view you don’t help those who aren’t asking for help. Mind your own business and don’t help if you aren’t asked and do not interfere if it doesn’t concern you. That’s the general view for all the Satanic teachings.
When it comes to the Way of Fire, you do what you must to become stronger and to survive. You will always strive to become stronger. Though without the Firewall and Hellfire to protect you don’t have anything to actually become stronger to if you don’t substitute something.
About can and are allowed to, it depends on the mission, assignment or quest. The urgency, what you interfere with and why. To follow the directives are not a law of The Eye but it is in the same, the strongest law. Thus every situation depends on both the reasons behind it as well as the outcome.
Say that you are in an Eye Squad. You have an urgent mission to intercept a Wizard that is potentially dangerous that plans to kill a Prophet who is the only one who can decipher a special fragment of a prophecy which will ultimately change the course of something momentous like a war.
You then see a crying child being bullied by other children. You then decide against your Squad Leaders orders and the extreme urgency of the mission to help the child with his or hers bullies.
This you might even get more than a reprimand for if the Squad fails…
Say though that you have an assignment to look over the negotiations of two ambassadors in a village. The meetings for the day is over and you’re out on a stroll outside the village. You see a woman being chased by vicious brutes that probably wants to rape her. Your assignment says that you shouldn’t interfere and only observe the happenings in this village and not effect anything. But you decide to save this woman anyway and put the Brutes to justice.
This would be accepted.
But every situation is unique and sometimes you will get a reprimand even though your intentions were good and the outcome was right. But you might also get a ‘decoration’ or a ‘medal’ alongside with your reprimand for the same reasons.
The situations are more than one can count and also more than you can simply just put in terms of yes and no. The Eye is a military organization with a strict hierarchy and discipline. Thus things such as following orders and going by the book is valued but also free thinking and being able to see beyond the simple words of a law which by the very essence of being written words is flawed, is valued.
Do you understand?
