X-Files – RPG

I played with the kids today. And we played for pretty long too. I think this was the longest session we’ve had with only the kids and the longest period I’ve had the kids here with my by themselves. If one should call them kids anymore, hehe.

They’ve grown quite much I must say even tough the people behind the faces still are very much the same. It’s been 2½ year since I first met Rasmus and I must say that he hasn’t changed much at all other than picking up some new traits and for some reason started to mimic some of my behaviour patterns.

Well, as you’ve heard by now Robert and Rasmus has decided to pick up RPG again and it was Robert’s suggestion to play something that would be similar or at least have the same feel to it as X-files. After about two or three weeks of discussion (mostly over SMS, but also over MSN) some things were decided and last week we had a discussion about how to proceed and I asked them a little what they wanted and so on and voila, here we are.

I’ve made a light free-form RPG based upon X-files which so far has been well received. The main part of the RPG is to capture the spirit of the series and make it similar which will require a lot from my part to plan the “Cases”1, to make this flow good and also add this mystique and suspense to it all without making it too hard.

The advantage of Free-form RPG is that you don’t have numbers and seldom uses a die except for in rare situations when it’s really more up to luck than to skill. I’ve made it like that that the skills that they have they can and they just have to pick a selective number of skills and somehow complement each other so they have a good variety of skills which will help them solve their cases.

The first session was a success and they actually managed to do most of it (except for the grand finale) all by them selves. There were some details there in the end and some ideas I had to lead them to or suggest for them to be able to proceed. But the main thing is that we had fun and enjoyed our selves all day long. We actually finished the case around 21:00 and then Robert and Rasmus spent the rest of the time playing HALO 3 on my television while I rested.

This has been a really fun day I must say. I really enjoyed myself in ways I seldom enjoy myself with the main group or The Outsiders. But that might be due to my relationship with the kids compared to my relationship to the other groups. My main goals with the kids are solely one thing; to make sure they have fun and find in enjoyable. No demands, no requirements. No strings, no ties.

Well, we all look forward to the next session, but next up is the LAN we’ve been planning on having the next week Tuesday to Thursday, which actually might eliminate quite a lot of RPG next week. Thursday is a maybe and Friday too, Saturday might be more plausible but Sunday I’m in Gällivare. And Monday, well, I will get visitors then so I won’t have time to play that day I think. But maybe, it depends on the visitors.

Best regards,
Herid Fel
