Speciality Update – The Tekkan
Since I had to cut the post into two, which wasn’t my original intention, I will cut all the parts into one part per speciality. So now for my personal favourite which still rocks big time! It had to be changed a little since the changes I’ve made to Dual Wield so now it’s more suited to the current Dual Wield. Know that if you are a dual wielder you will always add your negative modification on the rolls with your secondary hand. You need to be ambidextrous not to be affected by it and still you will always need Dual Wield if you are going to fight with two weapons or if you tend to have a secondary defensive weapon such as shield, par-staff or anything else you use solely to defend yourself with. Well, let’s get on with the Tekkan now!
Tekkan
Tekkan is a warrior which uses his agile body and sinister techniques to bring down his enemies. They are often Hireswords and fight for money, honour and pride. They can be seen in all countries for most purposes, from mercenaries, guards and hunters to thieves, assassins and robbers. They use techniques to most things and most of them dual wield blades such as axes and swords. Where there is money to gain there is Tekkans.
As you can see above they are proficient in advanced combat techniques as well as they have more SC than anyone else. They are also the worst unarmed foes you most probably will encounter amongst the eight base races. Well, let’s to a walk through their abilities.
Conversions – They can convert either AC, CC or MC to SC if they need it. Nobody else can convert energy this quickly to SC and in a long hard battle with a lot of draining techniques this can be quite handy. They can either just convert one of their other energies or they can combine them or take from all to regain their strength.
Block Strike – This is a technique only a Tekkan can perform. They block with one of their weapons (free of choice) and then attack with the other. They will have -3 on both rolls which hurts a little but unlike someone else they can now attack with the other weapon which sometimes can prove useful. Actually I have enemies which will be come easy to defeat if you can do this and have a steady weapon. Fortunately they exist in Taraien =).
Dual Block – All can do this if they have Dual Wield, but only the Tekkan gains additional DUB to both their weapon when they do this. It costs a little but sometimes it sure is worth it.
Dual Strike – As the Dual block this too is something most people with Dual Wield can do but only Tekkan can increase their DMG with this attack. It will be extra hard to perform the attack but it will hurt the more for the creature who will be hit. Requires that both weapons have the same range.
Kiai – Focuses all the strength of the Tekkan in one powerful punch or kick which can prove to be quite hard. This strike also has a chance to push the enemy off balance which might be useful sometimes. It’s aim able which makes it even more devious.
Shiai – Strengthens the Tekkans senses so he is able to predict his enemy better for a short while. It’s also possible to defend oneself with this technique. So if the target were to counter the Tekkan the bonus will still be in effect.
Tenai – Strengthens the Tekkans arm or legs so it can withstand an attack better. Will always take at least one damage. Is totally useless against some attacks if the Tekkan doesn’t have any kind of protection on his arms.
Oh it seems like I finished this one quickly. Well I guess that’s okay since I’ll soon need to go to bed. So I guess I will take the other two tomorrow instead before Daniel arrives.
Best regards,
Herid Fel
Conversion:
Good work! I like it. Exactly what was needed.
Block Strike:
Really effective thing. Very expensive, but as you noted it will make some things really effective. It is like the special strikers ability to take up damage and make their own attack except for that they don’t need to take up the damage.
Dual Block:
Effective, yes. But not that effective. One extra action? I think it would suffice to drain the SC. It is rather evil to drain actions for defences. But maybe… I expect normal dual wielders will pay that same action for blocking with two weapons. May not be as extreme then…
Shiai:
Can this be done with a weapon? Doesn’t explicitly say it is now allowed anywhere, but as far as I remember meditate was only used for unarmed combat before…
Tenai:
It both reduces the damage taken and also gives a bonus while defending? Or is the MOD +LvL a typo? Doesn’t say anything about the MOD in the descriptions.
Everyone needs one action to use Dual Block, yes. But the Tekkan gains some Bonus with DUB.
All Meditation-abilities only works for unarmed attacks so no, no weapons are allowed except for weapons that are considered Melee unarmed weapon.
You got Tenai right. You both gain some bonus while defending and reduces the damage taken, if possible.
I’m not certain that I understand conversions correctly.
Correct me if I’m wrong but it seems abit… Strange.
If I want to perform a single conversion it costs five minus my level in combat arts but minimum one to gain one SC. So when maxed out I will pay only one point of one energy for this. A 1-1 ratio.
For a double or triple conversion I would have to pay four minus my level in combat arts, minimum two or three. But is it the total cost that is the minimum or is it minimum for each resource?
That the “higher” conversions would benefit less from high skill level seems strange to me. Some guy with level one combat arts have the same triple conversion as someone with level five. Unless the “minimum cost” is the total resource cost rather than an single resource cost.
If I understand this right, then I think the two later look really bad. Double conversion is a 6-2 ratio, triple is 9-5 and takes two actions. Well, I guess the point would be to gain SC quickly. But then the big reason to do a triple over a double would be cost efficiency rather than speed as you only gain half a point of SC/round (compared to double).
If the minimum cost is total for all the resources used, then the triple conversion is superior in ratio by far. And then there wouldn’t be much point in using the single conversion at all. Double conversion would be superior in speed, and have the same ratio as a single conversion.
Obviously that is the case since you ramble on quite well after this statement… I can’t understand how something so simple can become so hard to understand for some.
To clarify I will give you some exemples.
Say you have level 1.
Single will then cost 4p of either AC, CC or MC and you will gain 1 SC.
Double will then cost 3p of either AC+CC, AC+MC or CC+MC and a total cost of 6p to gain 2 SC.
Tripple will then cost 3p of all the capacities and a total cost of 9p to gain 5 SC, tough it will take 2 actions.
For every level the cost will decrease with 1, 2 or 3 until it’s reached the minimum level.
On level four it will be the following;
Single will cost 1p
Double will cost 2p (1+1)
Tripple will cost 3p (1+1+1)
And why shouldn’t you use tripple all the time?
Well for instance, you might want to have som SC left for your enemies to kill you instead of killing yourself? Or you are a mage or Ki Striker who actually needs his AC or MC. That’s why the tripple takes energy from all the sources and takes two actions…
Simple as that and if you think that double and tripple are bad… then you either see something I am completely missing (I did a table to check this abilitys worth before I made it) or you are just thinking wrong………….
Well, this is the way I prefered of the two ways I thought it could be like. But it does make single conversion seem like a rare occurence, maybe I’m simply too focused on cases were SC is the only relevant resource.
Yes I think this is the case =D
Since people might have missed this I will now comment this on all my Speciality Update posts.
I want your general opinion on these specialities.
How do you like them as they are now? Generally as well as personally?
Something you think should change or some change you think were really good?
Mostly just a general opinion so I know where you stand on these specialities. How you like them or not. Even though you might like them from a rule point of view how do you like them from your own point of view.
I’m looking forward to hearing at least something from you all =)
This has increased the Tekkan’s standing with me. Something more to do if you are not a dual wielder and currently are using a weapon. It enables a Tekkan to use ever more SC, which in this case is pretty much the only thing it is good for. But as a dual wielder or unarmed figher this is even better.
So , the last one , now I like this one aswell , hehe now Ive said that on all four specialties but its true I like them all.. actually I like all specialties in Nianze and the reason for this is probably because the game itself is very unrestricted when it comes to creating a character and even more with the current gaming-style.
But enough rambling and lets say something about Tekkans instead.
In my oppinion they give a wide variety on how to play a melee type of character , and they do it well.
As for their stats and specialties, I think conversion was a nice move and it will probably prove useful in longer battles or if youre using really expensive techniques.
And finally Dual-wield has a workable solution which is good and the three techniques they got gives them some more edge.
When it comes to meditate I think its a nice thing for Tekkans and it makes unarmed users competitive , although it almost feels like a must to play Tekkan if youre aiming to be an unarmed fighter , which isnt bad but still abit forced , but I guess that goes for alot of other classes aswell.
All in all I like the way Tekkans is and how they are viewed in an in-game perspective aswell.
Oh you never learn it seems… or you just forget and neglect everything I say because it’s fun or something.
A tekkan is like some games’s monks or martial artists. They are weapons as a whole, precicely as other people are weapons. But only because they can add damage to their hits and some numbers you get too focused on them as usual…
I don’t see it as forced, I don’t even see Tekkan as the best in unarmed combat, that’s no doubt the Warrior if anything. They are boxers, and pretty bad at that without grappling and stamina too (stamina=athletics speciality). The only thing they actually are good at is to punch hard. But even a person with martial arts can be defeated by a brawler…
