“What?!” you say and look questioningly at me. I look back and smile then I open my mouth.

I died.

And then the pain came. Shooting through the darkness came the pain of death, like nothing I’ve ever experienced before. Whirling all around me, in me, through me, with me. The one who thought that death were painless endless sleep were obviously wrong, this pain were a thousand times stronger than the pain of life.

I could hear a brief thumping somewhere, as the pain and agony filled me. I felt freezing cold and burning warm at the same time, and then it all stopped. Darkness, emptiness, with the agony and pain as only a memory.

It took me a while before I realized that the darkness engulfed me and panic shoot up in my chest. I reached out, only to feel compressed, like the darkness tried to crush me. I had trouble breathing and in my growing panic I just waved around me with all my strength.

There was a loud noise followed by a couple of splashes as the box on the other side of the blue torch exploded in a cascade of tree splinters. I immediately jumped out of my box and squinted against the other box, as the blue torch made tears flow from my eyes.

Out of the rubble from the box a large silhouette stood up. Judging by the size of the silhouette it was a male, even larger and more muscular than me. I took a careful step forward. Still on my guard if the big guy were to attack.

“Who’s there!?” I shouted still on my guard for an attack.

“I… I don’t know,” a confused dull voice answered. I opened my mouth and then I realized that I didn’t know who I was either, or where I was or why? I felt a creeping fear grab hold of me and the panic was starting to return. I felt so helpless.

Suddenly a high pitched muffled sounded. Both me and the big guy flinched and listened. The sound was coming from a third box, lying there, between us and the torch. I gazed at the big guy as he suddenly started moving towards the box.

Suddenly a bluish streak of light intruded in the darkness and panic suddenly changed to fear and fear transformed to aggression. When the dark blue shadow of a head showed up an my feet I shoot up from the box and attacked the strange man that had trapped me.

The man took a surprisingly agile step aside, easily dodging my attack as I landed in front of the horrible blue torch in the middle of a strange platform made out of stone.

SPLASH!

As my attacker had avoided my attack he had stepped outside the platform into the dark water surrounding the strange crossshaped platform. I smiled to myself.

Suddenly the blue fire on the torch turned red and all my muscles froze. I was totally paralyzed.

SPLASH!

I fell down into the water as I tried to avoid the strange shadow that had been shooting up out of the box. At first fear struck me and I tried to wave my hands in the way I somehow knew I should do in water.

But my body didn’t move, not even an inch. It was like I was totally powerless and with no strength in my body. And somehow I felt a chilling cold as my energy ran out of me. Fear grew to panic and I opened my mouth only to discover choking and drowning.

I fell deeper and deeper into the water and my fear grew to helplessness. I couldn’t do anything and my body wouldn’t move no matter how much I tried. Fear, panic and helplessness combined with the darkness almost drove me crazy as I suddenly were lifted up out of the water.

Hanging there, above the water in the red light of the blue torch, I just stared at the strange creature on the stone bridge leading out into the darkness in fear. I was confused, helpless and frustrated. Why was I here? Why me? What had I done?

Why, why, why echoed in my head and then the creature in front of me smiled and put me down on the platform again. Still all too confused and scared I looked at it as the creature opened its mouth and said, “Follow me.”

And so we did, all three of us, followed him onto the bridge into the darkness…
