A Dark Life – 1×01 – The Awakening

Sinder was sitting in his usual chair, writing in his usual book when he felt the warning from the incoming. He politely answered with the precise amount of respect necessary for the visitor’s grade and calmly put back the pen into its quill. Dark clouds appeared in front of his desk and quickly materialised to a seemingly young man with hair black as night that were framing a beautiful but sinister face. Sinder new this man, he himself had tutored him after he were turned by an outcast. But he had gone a long way since then, a long way.

“Oh Martin! What a pleasant surprise to have you visiting me, but why travel at daylight?” he said as he stood up to show him his respect. He was after all, a Spider.

“My dear Master Sinder, please be seated. I might have more power than you, but you’re still my master in my heart,” he said and smiled as he himself summoned a chair and sat down before him. Sinder nodded as he sat down and he noted that Martin’s day cloak was dirty, which was unusual for Martin.

“So Spider Martin, what can I do for you? I assume you’re here in business?” he asked and silently waited for his response with his hands on his lap. Even though he had told him that he were his master, he still seemed to hold on to the formalities. It was never wise to completely let them go.

“You know me all to well Master, I am indeed here in business. I have five more bodies for you,” he said calmly without even the slightest variation in his tone.

“I see, I’ll have them put into the graveyard and have some of the lesser put them into the pen when they’re ready,” he said calmly, but he couldn’t help but looking a little bit surprised. A Spider to send bodies? Their slaves could do that!

“These bodies are special; they were turned by the Ancients, personally.” He said with great respect his voice. Sinder immediately became interested; the Ancients sending bodies to him? The Elders had sent him many bodies before but never the Ancients. He had once been in the presence of an Ancient, and that was probably the most fulfilling a mediocre vampire like him ever would experience. Martin on the other hand had even been called to the court of The One and The True.

“I will get them masters immediately,” he said and opened his book and started to flip through the pages. He did his best to hide his interest, as a Spider he could report him and he didn’t want to be reported as disobedient.

“Your orders are to have them go through The Rite of Awakening and they should all have only one Master,” he said with a resolute tone with a brief touch of an unseen warning. He had seen his interest in the Ancients prodigies, which he clearly stated were not accepted. He erased his feeling without a second thought and then closed the book.

“That will take a lot of energy, and it will require the approval of The One,” he said in an indifferent tone. Martin just reached inside his jacket and brought forth an old parchment with two signets’ in the wax; The One and The Ancient. He didn’t need to read it, but receiving a letter from The One was a great honour so he broke the signet and quickly read the letter. As he read it his curiosity sprung up again, but he trapped it in his mind.

“You will take care of it, I am sure of it,” Martin said and didn’t even bother to stand up before he dissolved into thin air leaving Sinder alone in his chamber again.

This was highly interesting. He hadn’t had anyone like these for a long time; it would be a pleasure to see these grow up. Unluckily for the Ancients, Sinder wasn’t out of the web. He had his orders, and so two of these bodies would die in the turning process and never wake up. He smiled to himself, for years he had been playing it safe, but this might as well get him burned. That was a wonderful sensation for a vampire of almost two hundred years.

Hehe , well this was interesting , seeing the story from another perspective and not just read an evaluation of the session.

This also gave abit more hints and clues about the vampiric society but im pretty sure that was intended =).

Spider = Obviously some sort of high-ranking official , since a younger vampire could be above an elder one.

The Elders = Appearantly another faction of elder vampires that probably have some sort of influence and power.

The Ancients = sounds like the vampires that are on top of the food chain so to speak , which probably everyone I listed above obeys(but appearantly there are plots even there since this Sinder guy seems to have his own agenda.).

The One and The True = Well they mentioned it as a “court of” which could imply alot of things , like a very strong vampire leader(the old “crystal vampires” =)?) , a ancient place for the vampires(birthplace maybe?) or maybe just a court where they decide upon things.

Anyway I know I wont get the answers of these speculations but I know you like to hear them so I gave it a go =). Otherwise it was a interesting story and the session yesterday felt very good , so im looking forward to the next alot.

Oh I forgot some points.(didnt have time to edit =(.)

“Turned by an Outcast” = So appearantly it seems like there are vampires outside the “normal” vampiric society or something like that.

The Pen = Sounds like the place we woke up in or maybe still are inside of.

The Rite of Awakening = Well.. I suppose thats what we are going through at the moment.

Oh and Sinder seems to be some sort of mentor for newlyborn vampires , like a mentor of some sorts.

    And now some spelling errors.

“Oh Martin! What a pleasant surprise to have you visiting me, but why travel at daylight?” he said as h stood up to show him his respect. He was after all, a Spider.

Just a slight error there , guessing it should be another “he”

Actually I didnt find much more , but I bet they are out there.

You are so perceptive, how can I ever hide anything from you?

The Pen = Sounds like the place we woke up in or maybe still are inside of.

    Nope.

    Glad you liked it.

Yes, some interesting details in here as mentioned. Wonder what happened to the two who “died” in the turning process… Personal pets for Sinder, or whoever he is taking orders from perhaps? Obviousle we have some intrigue here.

The question is only what the web is. Obviously there are spiders siding with the Ancients, but the other force seem to consist of spiders somehow since some contact network of it seem to be called the web.

    Burn… Argh! The sun!

This was the short story I told you about earlier, which I decided wasn’t the best time to post it.

I thought that it would be more better if I put it up after the actual session instead because then you would see it in another way since it directly concerns you.

I made some adjustments to the text to make it better.

    This story was an interesting read and it left me curious about a few things. Assuming we are three out of those five I really want to know what happend to them. Other than that I’m wondering about two sentences towards the end of the text;

Unluckily for the Ancients, Sinder wasn’t out of the web.

The only theory I can come up with that would make sense given the information we have is that “the web” is an organisation in which ‘spiders’ work.

He smiled to himself, for years he had been playing it safe, but this might as well get him burned. That was a wonderful sensation for a vampire of almost two hundred years.

What “burned” means interests me…. Maybe it simply means trapping a vampire out in the open to be burned by the sun. It could also be any number of things, but again this one makes the most sense to me.
